Former DIN EN 779
The previously valid DIN EN 779 (e.g. 2012 edition) defined filter classes such as G1 to G4 (coarse filters), M5 and M6 (medium filters) as well as F7 to F9 (fine filters). This classification mainly focused on particle size and separation efficiency under specific test conditions.
- G classes (e.g. G4): Mainly filter coarse dust and larger particles.
- M classes (e.g. M5, M6): Serve as a transition between coarse and fine filters.
- F classes (e.g. F7, F9): Ideal for fine filtration, where particularly high requirements for air purity are demanded.
New standard ISO 16890
For several years now, ISO 16890 has set the standards by classifying filters according to their separation efficiency with respect to different particle sizes. The main categories are:
- ISO Coarse: For separating coarse particles - an equivalent range to the former G classes.
- ISO ePM10, ePM2.5, ePM1: The number after “PM” indicates up to which particle size (in micrometres) is filtered. For example, “ePM1” is suitable for particularly fine particulate matter, corresponding to the former F classes (fine filters).
